*(“How I get my overseas parcels released without tears”) *
Watch for the first notice
Channel: KakaoTalk (or occasionally an e-mail / SMS).
Title you’ll see: “국제우편물 간이통관 안내”.
From the parcel’s landing date at Incheon you have 30 days before it is automatically returned.
Collect the two essential documents
• Invoice / receipt that shows the item price and the shipping fee.
• Clear product image (page screenshot or your own photo).
Tip: make sure the text is legible; blurred proofs trigger extra checks.
Submit the electronic declaration
PC: open https://unipass.customs.go.kr/csp/index.do, scroll to the bottom bar and click the ✈️📩 “국제우편물 통관” icon.
Mobile: Scan the QR code in the Kakao message (customs page) and follow the guide in https://blog.naver.com/k_customs/222678813571.
On the form:
– Describe the goods plainly (“Smartwatch 1 ea”, “Shoes 2 prs”, etc.).
– Enter the exact price and shipping cost, tick 전자상거래, select personal use.
– Attach the invoice, add your PCC code (P-xxxxxxxxxxxx), and submit.
Respond promptly if customs asks for more
If a follow-up Kakao/e-mail arrives (or a physical letter) requesting additional proof, send the materials to [email protected].
Use the subject format they provide, e.g. [통관번호 286235-J] 자료제출.
Check the tax assessment
Once documents are accepted you’ll receive a second message titled “관세 등 납부할 세액 안내” containing:
– The total amount due (VAT + any duty).
– A virtual Bank account number.
Pay the customs amount
• Bank transfer: Send the exact figure to the virtual account shown in the message.
• Card option: Go to https://www.cardrotax.kr, enter the 고지번호 and pay by credit/debit card.
Pay Korea Post’s handling fee (₩3 000)
Go to https://ems.epost.go.kr, open 메뉴 → 통관수수료 납부, enter the tracking number and pay. Both the tax and this fee must clear before delivery starts.
Track until delivery
– Uni-Pass status: 세관심사중 → 납부확인중 → 통관완료.
– EMS tracker: https://trace.epost.go.kr/xtts/servlet/kpl.tts.common.svl.SttSVL.
When it switches to 배송중, expect the courier within 1-2 business days.
Tax quick rule: If the declared value (item + shipping) is 150 USD or less (≈ ₩200 000) the parcel is usually VAT-free. Above that, expect 10 % VAT plus any category-specific duty (smartphones, for example, are duty-free, so only VAT applies).
Act I – Over-confidence
Saw the first Kakao ping while enjoying my coffee, thought “easy”. Took a grainy phone photo of the product and fired off the declaration in five minutes.
Act II – Potato-camera strikes back
Customs replied—twice. First by Kakao, then by physical mail (apparently they really hated my fuzzy pic). Deadline: 15 days or the box would fly home. Midnight scramble: replaced the potato shot with a crisp screenshot, e-mailed both files, hit send, fell asleep.
Act III – The bill
Next day: “Pay ₩265 030 VAT here—NH Bank 7900-…”. No delay; wired the cash instantly. Felt smug until I discovered the hidden ₩3 000 Korea Post “handling coffee”. Paid that too.
